Football Brought Them In. The Dream Became Much Bigger.

Football brought them in. The dream became much bigger.

Football will always remain at the heart of SOFE. It is what first connected the children to the project, built relationships with their families and created a sense of belonging within the community.

But over the years, SOFE began to understand something important: a child’s development cannot be separated from the realities of life beyond the football field. Education, health, nutrition, family circumstances, confidence, communication and exposure all influence the opportunities a child eventually receives.

That understanding gradually transformed SOFE from a football initiative into something much broader.

WHEN FOOTBALL HAD TO WAIT

The COVID pandemic became a defining moment in SOFE’s journey.

Football grounds closed, but a much bigger concern emerged. Families within the communities SOFE worked with were losing jobs and sources of income. For many, managing everyday essentials became increasingly difficult.

At that moment, football could wait. The families could not. SOFE reached out to its patrons, friends and well-wishers and initiated a crowdfunding effort to support the families of its students. Through the difficult months that followed, ration and essential supplies were provided to students and their families, with support continuing until circumstances gradually began to improve. It was one of the first moments when SOFE fully understood that its responsibility could not end when a child walked off the football field. The relationship was no longer only with the player. It was with the child and the family behind that child.

2015

THE FIRST BREAKTHROUGH

SOFE’s first major competitive success came at the Star Sports Young Heroes 2015, where its children, representing their school, competed against 63 other schools to become Kolkata Champions.

The team subsequently progressed to the National Quarter-finals, where they were eliminated by eventual champions Chandigarh.

The same year, Bijay Mondal, one of the players from that champion team, was selected for the Bengal U15 Santosh Trophy Team.

It was an early indication of what access to regular training and competitive opportunitie

That question continues to shape SOFE today.

That question continues to shape SOFE today.

Football remains its primary foundation, but the ecosystem around the children has gradually expanded to include education, spoken English, computer learning, life skills, vocational exposure, grooming and developmental workshops. Health has also become part of that responsibility. SOFE has organised free medical clinics for its students and their families, helping communities access basic health support and encouraging greater awareness around wellbeing. Different initiatives may address different needs, but they all come from the same understanding: Developing a footballer without developing the child is not enough.
